Unlike publication bias alone,\np-hacking that favors significant, positive results (termed\n\"affirmative\") can distort the distribution of affirmative\nresults. To bias-correct results from affirmative studies would\nrequire strong assumptions on the exact nature of p-hacking. In\ncontrast, joint p-hacking and publication bias do not distort\nthe distribution of published nonaffirmative results when there\nis stringent p-hacking (e.g., investigators who hack always\neventually obtain an affirmative result) or when there is\nstringent publication bias (e.g., nonaffirmative results from\nhacked studies are never published). This means that any\npublished nonaffirmative results are from unhacked studies.\nUnder these assumptions, RTMA involves analyzing only the\npublished nonaffirmative results to essentially impute the full\nunderlying distribution of all results prior to selection due\nto p-hacking and/or publication bias.
